JAMES BLUNDELL - COUNTRY MUSIC SUPERSTAR - AUSSIE LEGENDS HEMP AMBASSADOR

Country singer James Blundell in tune with hemp's $10 million-a-year potential for farmers

Fri 3 Mar 2023

On Queensland's Granite Belt, 200 kilometres south-west of Brisbane, sheep graze on the hard and rocky soils but the region could soon also be home to a boom new agriculture industry: cannabis.

Key points:

  • Granite Belt farmers are exploring the possibility of growing industrial hemp
  • Despite its rapid growth, hemp is not yet considered a commercial crop
  • The crop is projected to bring Australian farmers $10 million per year by 2026

Cannabis sativa, also known as hemp, is an emerging crop projected to bring Australian farmers $10 million a year by 2026 and trials in the Granite Belt have yielded success.

It contains less than 0.3 per cent tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), so it is not for those who seek the "high" traditionally associated with marijuana.

Certain varieties of hemp did well on the rocky soils of James Blundell's Stanthorpe property. (ABC Rural: Alys Marshall)

Stanthorpe grazier and Australian country music star James Blundell says he is pleasantly surprised by the results of a trial crop on his property.

"With the exception of a couple of more covert attempts to grow the plant back in my early 20s, this will be my first time growing [industrial hemp],"

 he said.

Mr Blundell's trial crop was overseen by statutory government body AgriFutures Australia and the University of Sydney to test the viability of nine different industrial hemp varieties under different climatic conditions.

Associate Professor Guy Roth led the project, which had trial sites at Stanthorpe and Narrabri, northwest NSW.

Dr Guy Roth inspects a tall hemp variety as part of the Stanthorpe trial. (ABC Rural: Alys Marshall)

"We cultivated the trials in a very similar way to most crops and used conventional cropping machinery and conventional practices, which makes it attractive to farmers," he said.

A place alongside cotton?

Both Mr Roth and agronomist John Muir, who managed the Stanthorpe trial, believe growing hemp along with traditional crops is key to the success of the burgeoning industry.

"At the moment, we generally recommend hemp to be irrigated,"

 Mr Muir said.

"If you are growing summer crops now, like cotton, then you can grow hemp."

AgriFutures Australia estimates that industrial hemp will require two-to-six megalitres of water per hectare, lower than cotton's average irrigation requirement of between six and seven megalitres.

A booming industry

Australia's production of hemp has grown from 100 hectares in 2013-14 to 2,300 hectares in 2020-21.

Hemp Farms Australia CEO Lauchlan Grout says that, despite this rapid growth, hemp still is not considered a commercial crop, but he believes this is changing.

"The reason is the end market probably hasn't had enough time to grow or scale into something that could allow farmers or processors to be profitable," Mr Grout said.

Lauchlan Grout says the hemp industry is on the verge of becoming commercial. (ABC Rural: Alys Marshall)

"Per tonne of clean and dried seed for a food or a nutritional cosmeceutical market, hemp now goes for anywhere between $2.60 to $3 per kilogram," he said.

"So there is a lot of value in the product and the end market can afford it.

"The processing just requires quite a lot of up-front capital but the big guys are doing that now."

Faith in the industry's growth

Blundell has high hopes for his farm's future in hemp.

"I'm absolutely altruistic about the value of the plant," he said.

"I know how good it is and I'm ruthless, ruthlessly commercial about it."

He said by 2025 his hemp could be used as building material, animal feed, clothing fibre or a consumable health product.

"I would regard that as a remarkable achievement," he said.

Research needs to keep pace

On a hemp plot just out Narrabri, NSW Department of Primary Industries plant pathologist Karen Kirkby says research needs to keep up with the farmers' enthusiasm.

Karen Kirkby believes that research needs to keep up with the burgeoning industry. (ABC Rural: Alys Marshall)

"It's not a new industry," she said.

"It's actually quite old but as far as the technology and knowledge applied to it in Australia, it's still emerging.

"So I'd like to increase that knowledge."

Ms Kirkby supports the creation of a hemp cooperative research centre to achieve this: "Then we can align these new projects for a long term [research] outcome."

Video-What is a rocket mass heater?

What is a rocket mass heater?

Aug 14, 2017

Thanks Paul Weaton - for I have answered the "what is a rocket mass heater?" question hundreds of times.   This is my attempt to make a very short answer.  Sure, there is a hundred times more info .... maybe a thousand times more info ...   but the function of this video is to give a quick idea of what it is.  We start with the idea of a conventional wood stove.  The fire is typically around 1000 degrees F.  Heat is extracted immediately.   Smoke goes up the chimney due to a thermosiphon.  This design has the problem of creosote leading to chimney fires.  So if you insulate the chimney, the chimney gets hot enough that the creosote burns much more often - thus reducing the risk.  But the downside is that more heat leaves the house through the chimney.     We shift the design to insulate the fire box.  With temperature now at 1800 degrees F, the creosote and the smoke are burned.  The exhaust is mostly steam and CO2.  We can now safely extract more heat.   We add a stubby chimney so we can push the exhaust wherever we want.  We add a mass to absorb heat.  That's it.  A rocket mass heater.    And then we add some pictures of pretty rocket mass heaters.    Thanks Paul Weaton for shaing videot

how is a rocket mass heater so efficient? video

how is a rocket mass heater so efficient?

May 1, 2022

A rocket mass heater claims to heat a home with one tenth the wood of a conventional wood stove.  HOW is that possible? Let's start by looking at the label on conventional wood stove.  This label is allowed to have 16 extra percentage points to compensate for some of the heat that goes up the chimney.  So a wood stove that says it is 75% efficient, is actually 59% efficient.  Different testing facilities compete to measure the efficiency of a wood stove, so they work hard to produce numbers better than their competitors.  Legitimately.  They might use especially dry wood, or there could be a little extra air pressure in a test lab - things that could plausibly happen in an optimal home scenario.  So the resulting numbers are higher than if their competitor had done the same test and yet still fall within a space of being legit.  But this means that most people using a 59% efficient wood stove will probably operate it at 20% efficiency on average.  And most people putting a big green log on just before bed with dampers set low might be getting less than 3% efficiency.  And when the fire is down to just embers, the stove might continue to pull heat out of the house, resulting in negative efficiency.  It is pretty easy for a rocket mass heater to compete with 3% efficiency.  And even easier to compete with negative efficiency.  When using a conventional wood stove properly, the law requires an exit temperature of at least 350 degrees.  350 to 600 degrees is the most common.  No matter how efficient the burn is, that's a LOT of heat going outside.    Rocket mass heaters typically test at 93% efficiency.  That is without adding the 16% for going up the chimney.  And the exhaust temperature tends to be 70 to 140 degrees.  Since the mass holds the heat through the night after an efficient burn, people are not attempting to set up an inefficient burn through the night.  Most people shifting from conventional wood stoves to rocket mass heaters report heating their homes with one tenth the wood.  Some people have shifted from modern, super efficient wood stoves that they were using very wisely - and those people report heating with 75% to 80% less wood.  Heat your home with one tenth the wood, one hundredth the smoke and wake up to a warm home.   Safer, cheaper, cleaner, easier and more luxuriant than a conventional wood stove.   Safer, cheaper, cleaner and better for the environment than natural gas or electric heat.  bernal brothers animation https://permies.com/bernal  Thanks Paul Weaton for shaing video

rocket mass heater cooling in the summer: video

rocket mass heater cooling in the summer

Jun 28, 2021

In the summer I leave the wood feed for the rocket mass heater wide open.  In the day, I keep the windows closed, and during the night I keep the windows open.    At night, the temperature outside is a little colder than the temperature inside.   Since the temperature in the barrel is all about the same, the “p-trap” action is disabled.   The warmer air in the vertical exhaust moves up and outside.   This pulls air in through the wood feed, past the barrel, through the mass and out the roof.  Air is moving, slowly, through the whole system.  As dawn approaches, the mass has been cooled a bit - pretty close to the coldest point at dawn.    During the day, the temperature outside is warmer than inside.   A cold plug happens.   Air no longer moves through the system.    At the hottest point of the day, people tend to gather near the rocket mass heater since it is now the coolest part of the house.   The mass feels quite cool.    Doing the thing about opening the windows at night is an old technique that cuts about seven to ten degrees off the hottest part of the day.  I think leaving the wood feed open all the time, cools the room about five to seven degrees more at the hottest part of the day.  Zero electricity - entirely passive.   Video and animation by Bernal Brothers Studio  Music Carmen Suite no. 2 - 2.
