Working Dogs: Bridging the Labor Gap & Profitability in Australia’s Livestock Industry

Farmers across Australia are increasingly turning to working dogs to address the critical labour shortages & profitability issues in the livestock industry. These highly trained canines play a vital role in herding and managing livestock efficiently. Here’s why they’re becoming indispensable: 1. Efficiency and Versatility: Working dogs, such as border collies and kelpies, excel at herding cattle and sheep and educate livestock to become calm, collected, confident and profitable.  They tirelessly run all day, ensuring livestock are corralled and kept in check. Their ability to cover vast territories and access areas inaccessible to humans or bikes makes them invaluable. 2. Labor Shortages: The bush faces a shortage of human workforce, prompting farmers to rely more on working dogs. These dogs are now considered a valuable part of the team, filling the gaps left by labor shortages 3. Cost-Effective Solution: With the high cost of human labor, having well-trained working dogs eliminates the need to employ and accommodate additional staff. These dogs are bred to work livestock efficiently, making them a cost-effective alternative.

4. Livestock just get it. The Predator - Prey relationship of Working Dogs & Livestock is a phononeum that we as humans can't do alone. We as humans are the orchestra leaders and then let the working dogs utilise their natural instincts to play the music. The result is livestock become calm, confident, relaxed and the your business becomes more profitable on all triple line factors of Economics - People - Environment.

In summary, working dogs are not only hardworking companions but also crucial contributors to Australia’s livestock industry.

Only can see Lolley (border collie foundation female) working at tail of mob,  but all of team are out there (young & old) working on all sides doing their thing, working on instinct with very little instruction from me.

A Cohesive working dog team is similar to a sporting team such a basket ball or football team, all playing their key positions, keeping the mob flowing & creating livestock to be calm - collected - confident  manner.

Puppy Crate Training

Beloka Kelpies:

We find crate training is one of the most important things for kelpie pups. If you don't like the look of a crate, try to see it from the dogs point of view.   We recommend crate training to all our clients who have their pups inside. With many great reviews this is probably our number one problem solver! Pups and dogs are more settled and relaxed, and a well rested dog is more content and functions better in life.   Note: this video is made for kelpie pups. You can still crate train an older dog. However, dogs with separation anxiety and/or other problems might need a slower introduction to the crate. A professional dog trainer can help you if needed.

Working Dog Documentaries

Greg Prince "My Way - Firm But Fair"

In this video DVD available through  https://www.kelpiehistory.com/productsRent on Buy https://vimeo.com/ondemand/gregprinceGreg

Prince often referred to as the, “Prince of Sheepdog Trainers” In reality, Greg was the undisputed, “King of Sheepdog Trainers”. In his domain, he ruled with almost total dominance. His conquests include 16 National Sheep Dog Championships and 9 Supreme Australian Sheep Dog Championships, not to mention his success winning many State and country championships.  He also represented Australia multiple times in the Trans-Tasman series against, New Zealand. This humble man when asked to explain the perfect score he received in a trail, Greg simply said, “Well, there’s three good sheep in every mob and I was lucky enough to get them today”.  Capitulation amongst his peers was total. Their consensus of opinion, “Greg’s record will never be beaten” Greg could have left an even more impressive record, if not for illness and his eventual death at the young age of 74.  In this video, Greg demonstrates his dogs working and reveals his 10-step training program for farm or competition. This includes training in the round yard, backing sheep in the race and working in the paddock. After teaching people to work their dogs for more than 20 years, Greg revealed his philosophy on training, temperament, balance, pup selection and commands delivered with voice and whistle. Greg comments on the varied working characteristics of his endless list of National champions which are proudly displayed on his wall of fame. In his absence, Greg’s wife Jan Prince describes their challenges and circumstances together, which eventually saw Greg, achieve his ultimate goal.  This video is not just a one-off training program, it’s about Greg’s achievements and leaving a lasting training legacy that will benefit future sheep dog workers for years to come.
